Hand engraving on jewelry is a rare art form of using gravers or sharp knives to perform the engraving.  The graver is held in one hand usually always the right hand.  They are slid along the thumb as a support pushing with the other four fingers to cut out a small curl of metal away from the jewelry piece to create a letter.  The first step is a design with a white paint applied to the jewelry item with hand drawing of the letters or design onto the paint.  With hand engraving any design or letter style you can imagine can be executed on just about any piece of jewelry even if the jewelry item has a curved surface.  The most amazing part about hand engraving is the look and feel of the letters.  They have a crisp clean look and feel only hand engraving can create.  Hand engraving is the most expensive form of engraving with only a small number of engravers in the United States.  Another form of hand engraving is utilizing a machine called a Graver Meister.  This is a much less expensive form of hand engraving and requires less skill.  The Grave Meister is a machine that allows you to hold a cutting graver that is similar to an air hammer to allow you to cut into the jewelry item to create letters and designs.  Some stores perform this type of work if you request hand engraving and you may want to ask specifically how the engraving is executed.  Using this method the letters and designs can have a choppy look.  This depends on the skill level of the operator.  The most common type of engraving is machine engraving.  Machine engraving is when a diamond tipped stylus creates the letters when moved along the jewelry item.  There is no removal of any metal with this process.  Popular letter styles are of a double line style to help create depth and dimension of the letters.  Machine engraving is the most affordable type of engraving but can be limited with font styles and designs.  Machine engraving is usually subject to what styles are available for letter and designs.  Machine engraving is usually subject to what styles are available for letters and designs rather than letting your imagination run wild.  We offer engraving of many different jewelry items including inside ring engraving.  Fontana Jeweler is located on the west end of Lake Geneva.

December 9, 2011 platinum market price is at approximately two hundred dollars less per ounce than gold.  Gold is at approximately one thounsand seven hundred and twelve and platinum at one thousand five hundred and eight.  Historically platinum per ounce has always been at a price much higher than gold.  Considering the rarity of platinum compared to gold platinum represents an especially excellent value compared to gold at this time.  Platinum used in jewelry is commonly used at a ninety percent pure form with a ten percent alloy to help the platinum cast well.  Gold jewelry in the United States is commonly 14 karat or 58.333% pure gold with the rest alloyed with another metal.  18 karat gold is 75% pure gold.  So that being said platinum usually always contains more precious metal content than gold jewelry.  This does play a factor in platinum jewelry costing more than gold jewelry.  Another factor that adds cost to platinum jewelry is the high casting and soldering temperature of platinum requiring specialized tools and equipment not needed for gold jewelry.  Platinum also takes much longer to finish and polish than gold requiring special finishing materials.  That being said it is most likely platinum jewelry will most likely always be more expensive than gold jewelry.  However at this moment compared to the price of gold jewelry it represents an excellent time to consider platinum jewelry.  Some of the benefits of platinum jewelry include a heavy feel of quality.  Platinum jewelry just feels great on the finger or in your hand.  Platinum has a wear resistance factor that extends and adds many years to the life of your jewelry.  We have customers with platinum rings that they have been wearing for fifty years or more.  Their ring remains in excellent condition without any new prongs needed.  Platinum also grays slightly in time developing a fine patina that tells you this special jewelry piece is made from the best metal choice available.  Our expansive jewelry piece is made from the best metal choice available.  Our expansive jewelry showroom features many platinum jewelry items.  Stop in to Fontana Jeweler on the west end of Lake Geneva. Over the years the most common reason a customer will tell us is they are to let light into the gem.  This has little to no effect on most gems especially if we were talking about a well cut diamond.  A well cut diamond could be flush set into a black metal with no hole underneath and the diamond will reflect no less light than if set any different.  So why are these holes there.  The answer is when any gem is set the bottom of the gem should never touch any metal and it aids in cleaning under the gem.  The holes allow cleaning solution to reach under the gem and then our jewelry steamer nozzle can hit those areas for a completely sterilized cleaning.  If gems are set with no cleaning holes underneath and they were to be put into an ultrasonic cleaning tank the solution would work under the gem from around the edges.  This can be hard to remove and with lighter gems it may cause them to look hazy.  The gems might have to be removed cleaned and then be reset again.  Some jewelry style designs do not allow for cleaning holes so care is taken during cleaning.  Another reason is if the cleaning holes are bigger than they need to be it will lighten the setting and create a more affordable setting.  If a jewelry designer does this to fit a particular style in a customer's budget it should reflect a lower price to the customer.  Look at the construction of a jewelry peice; does it have a nice weight?  The more gold in a jewelry piece the more it will cost.  Here at Fontana Jeweler most all of our selections have cleaning holes incorporated into the designs and are no smaller or bigger than they need to be.  Stop in today on the west end of Lake Geneva to experience the areas largest collection of jewelry.

As jewelry ages with time small scratches can appear on the surface of the gems.  Most common with softer gems like tanzanite we see this effect, and less common with diamonds.  Diamonds can chip if struck in just the right way.  These scratches or small chips can greatly lessen the shine and flash of light that your gem displays.  Your gem may look hazy and fogged.  A regular cleaning will help but, never restore your gem to like new conditon.  There is a fix to repair your gem.  Gems can be repolished at any time generally without removing much of the gemstone weight.  This varies depending on the condition of the gem and how deep the chips are.  Gem polishing or cutting is different from polishing regular gold jewelry.  When polishing regular gold jewelery we us a buffing wheel and polishing compound.  Also using a polish wheel would wear down the many facets on the gem and destroy the flash effect and look.  Gem polishing is performed using diamond impregnated cutting wheels.  They look similar to a record.  The gem is aligned so one at a time each facet  is placed on the wheel just long enough  to polish that particular facet or remove the chip.  These cutting wheels allow a completely flat surface to be created on each facet creating a crisp clean look.  As a gem is moved in the light there is those awesome flashes of light we all love.  If you need a gem re-cut or polished we offer this service with free evaluations and estimates.  Bring back the fire in your gem and visit Fontana Jeweler on the west end of the Lake Geneva.

The crystal on a watch is the glass looking part that protects the dial and hands.  Most of us have broken one at one time during our lives.  There are many different types of crystals available for watches.  The most common type is a mineral glass crystal; they hold up well and are fairly strong but do scratch and can not be polished.  Less expensive watches have a plastic crystal, these scratch easily however if the scratches are not deep they usually can be buffed out.  The best watch crystals available on the market are the synthetic sapphire type.  These watch crystals are created in a laboratory of the same chemical composition of natural sapphire only created clear.  Synthetic sapphire watch crystals are the same hardness as a sapphire and are very hard to scratch.  More common we will see small chips on the edge of the crystal but no scratches on the surface.  We offer many watches featuring synthetic sapphire watch crystals.  Trust the experts at Fontana Jeweler on the west end of Geneva Lake.

I have seen stores that purchased scrap gold and use it to size rings up.  Technically there is nothing illegal about this as long as the gold content is the same as the ring.  It can create problems though.  With using an old ring for sizing stock the condition of it can be bad.  There might be old solder on it with sizing seams.  I have seen when a jeweler tries to solder a used section of ring into a new one the old section let's loose flying out in several pieces.  Use a jeweler that uses fresh sizing stock.  It costs the jeweler a little extra and his sizing charge may be two dollars higher than another but you ring demands the best.  O and of course Fontana Jeweler uses fresh sizing stock always.  Choose the best choose Fontana Jeweler on the west end of Geneva Lake for all your jewelry needs.

One thing that I always felt was misleading a customer is when some stores boast they custom made there jewelry piece.  I mean stores that do not even have a jeweler on site or send drawings to job shops to be made.  I can not tell you how many stores out there say we made this jewelry piece.  For a customer to tell the difference may be hard, and to trust what the store tells you I do not blame the customer for that.  To me a custom jewelry piece made by a particular store should have been, designed and finished on site.  Having the casting done at a casting company is understandable.  Casting is a hot and dirty process with some danger possibilities.  The on site jeweler should have designed and finished the casting with all the gem setting work and final finishing done on site.  With a custom made jewelry piece I feel with the cost you are paying for an excellent design with quality workmanship right down to the final finishes.  Not a mass manufactured look that some jewelry stores that send there things out end up with.  On site at Fontana Jeweler we finish out custom designed castings on site right down to the finishing touches.  The difference is clearly seen.  One of the most upsetting qualities of a poorly custom made jewelry piece is that they look chunky, and not pretty.  The more detailed finishing of a jewelry piece means less chunky but still retaining a heavy feel.  It takes more time to create a finished ring with small details finished to perfection.  I mean perfect flowing curves, with a crisp clean look.  In inexperienced polisher can ruin a great ring design by too heavily rounding off the corners and edges creating a muddy look.  Ask your jeweler, are you finishing my jewelry piece on site including the gem setting work right down to the finishing touches?  If they say we have off site jewelers that work for us, you may want to think twice.

Most of us have heard about jewelry stores that guarantee that any jewelry purchase will appraise at double your purchase price.  A proper value is what replacement cost would be looking at an average between a few stores selling price.  Some stores might be over pricing the values of jewerly on an appraisal because they may feel this might boost the customer confidence in the value in what they purchased.  Maybe so, but we feel this is wrong.  A misconstrued value on something educates the customer in a wrong way.  It harms the customer by causing them to pay overinflated insurance replacement costs that can be double or more of the real value.  We appraise jewelry at a fair market value with a cushion percentage factor to adjust for inflation for approximately six years.  At that point a new evaluation should be performed.  With many insurance companies they do not issue a check for a loss at the amount you are paying premiums on.  You can be paying premiums on values that you may never recoup with a loss.  We have an insurance agent next door.  When we were getting ready to open our new store the agent came over and asked us not to over appraise jewelry for insurances purposes.  My reply was we do not evaluate jewelry in that manner.  This agent was more concerned about his clients being handled professionally, more than making a profit on higher evaluated jewelry insurance riders.  Here at Fontana Jeweler we recognize the importance of accurate jewelry appraisals with your fine jewelry.  Visit us on the west side of Geneva Lake for all your appraisal needs.

Most of the time when a battery change is performed your chronograph wrist watch will not clear the hands back to zero.  For most watches the way to adjust the hands is to first pull the stem out to the last position.  Second click the start button untill the second hand clears at twelve o' clock.  Next press the lower stop button until the sub dial on the right clears zero.  Last push the crown back in one notch and use the start button to adjust the sub dial on the left to zero.  When all done be sure to push the crown all the way back in and screw it down if equipped with a screw down crown.  Our battery changes include setting the chronograph features on your watch.  We are located on the west end of Lake Geneva and have trained watchmakers to assist you.

A current trend that has been around for some time is jewelry of a larger size.  I personally have always appreciated jewelry and watches of a bigger size.  The amazing thing is for example a ring style that would have been difficult to sell ten years ago doesn't stay in the jewerly store for long.  Women are wearing larger watches, more of a midsize.  Midsize watches used to be difficult to sell because customers felt they were for a woman with a little larger frame or a smaller man.  Some of are clients are on the lookout for huge watches that look more like a small clock.  Some of are watch companies have told us not to try and seperat men's and ladies watches by category.  Another interesting trend we are experiencing is many requests for easy to read timepieces with large numbers or markers on the dial.  I can't help to think back in the 1930's how did the ladies read those micro small dials.  Virtually everyone today has a cell phone showing the time.  Because of this timepiece style is more important possibly than ever.  Watch companies are working hard to come out with stylish new watches that are beautiful to look at.  With rings most every lady today has at least one large fun ring to wear to parties and events.  We show the largest selection of jewelry around Lake Geneva and feature many larger styles of timepieces and jewelry.

We always get questions about can you swim with your jewelry being in the Lake Geneva area.  The 1st warning I always give is that the chlorine in pools and hot tubs can damage the finish on your jewelry.  Sterling silver is affected the most by usually turning black in color.  This usually can be fixed by intense polishing with a polish cloth or bringing the item to us to be comericially polished with a buffer and polish compound.  Gold in a pure form is highly resistant to chemicals.  Most all gold jewelry today has an alloy mixed with it to create different karat gold.  These alloys in the gold are affected by chlorine.  When some gold jewelry is exposed to chlorine usually for prolonged and multiple exposures jewelry can crack and come apart.  Often a prong holding a gem will break off leaving a tell tale lava rock texture where it broke off.  Depending on the casting company porosity can be in a casting and chrlorine will certainly attack this area and create problems.  Also several gems can be permanetly damaged by chlorine like turquoise.  So simply put jewelry does not belong in a swimming pool or hot tub.  As far as swimming in Lake Geneva this will not hurt your jewelry.  Watches however can leak and damage the movement inside.  Waterproof wrist watches should be pressure tested whenever opened and at five to six year intervals to help with assurance of not leaking water into the watch case.  If you ever have moisture in your watch bring it in so we can dry it out immediately.  Moisture left in a timepiece will in a short time ruin the movement.  Swimming in saltwater oceans with your water resistant watch to at least 330 feet is ok however when done rinse the saltwater off with freshwater to preserve the look of your watch.  Trust the experts on the west end of Lake Geneva for all your jewelry needs.  We offer just about every service related to the jewelry industry.

Did you know when it comes to larger top quality white diamonds they have sold for as much as $240,000 a carat.  Intense pink diamonds have sold for as much as $2.1 million a carat.  As far as colored diamonds go green and red are the rarest and generally are of a smaller size fetching the highest prices.  Blue and pink would come next in line.  They are less expensive but still very expensive.  Yellow diamonds are fairly common with the exception of certified canary yellow diamonds which have sold for $150,000 a carat.  Spinel that can be mistaken for ruby can sell for $100,000 while a high quality ruby can sell for 5 million.  Currently at auction 1920's jewelry are commanding the highest prices.  Natural pearls, Kashmir sapphires, Burmese rubies and diamonds mined before the 18th century are selling for extremely high prices because of there rarity.  Gems that have been heat treated are much less valuable.  Heat treating has been around for a long time and is an accepted practice in jewelry industry.  All sapphires mined in Ceylon were white up until a few centuries ago.  They did not acquire color until they were heated.  Hope you found these interesting gem facts fun.  Fontana Jeweler is you jewelers in the Lake Geneva area.

One of the most important rules in the care of silver is to use it daily and wash it thoroughly after each meal.  Constant use not only retards tarnishing but actually increases its beauty.  The richness, mellowness and depth of color of fine old museum pieces is the result of generations of daily usage.  The fear of scratching newly acquired silver is natural.  A multitude of fine scratches imparts a more durable, practical and beautiful finish than can be produced mechanically.  Silver does require an occasional polish.  Choose a good brand of polish and rub each piece lengthwise, never crosswise or with a circular motion.  Then wash them in hot, soapy water and rinse in clean hot water.  A small brush will remove the polish from the crevices in highly ornamented pieces.  Always make sure your silver pieces are dry before putting them away.

A Hallmark is a stamp applied by an authorized organization to articles of precious metals, after a test by assay, to denote fineness of quality.  By law in America all gold and silver jewelry is marked for gold and silver content along with the manufactures hallmark.  The manufactures mark is important to trace the jewelry piece back to them in the result the gold content is not accurate.  The most common stamps inside a gold ring are 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 585 for 14K, and 750 for 18K.  Sterling silver can also be marked S.S. or 925.

One thing for sure is regardless of the watch brand and the amount of your watch, it will not stay water resistant forever.  Watch companies use to be able to say waterproof.  Legally now they have to say water resistant and to how many feet or atmospheres.  This is because truly no watch is waterproof under all conditions.  High end diver watch companies advise their customers to have there watch serviced every six years to prevent the watch from leaking.  When serviced they replace the case back, seal, crystal, and crystal seal, and new stem and crown.  Then a pressure test is performed to replicate the desired depth that the watch should be guaranteed to resist.  I would be leery of inexpensive watches rated for swimming or diving.  Some of these watch companies do not even take the time to pressure test there watches.  They usually carry a short warranty or none at all.  I am a firm believer that the fact is a watch you are swimming with should have a screw down winding crown and case back.  Watches with push buttons are extremely hard for watch companies to make water-resistant and I do not recommend swimming with these watches.  One exception is the Rolex Daytona because it is equipped with push button that screw down to seal water out.  For most stores a pressure test is something separate from a regular battery change.  However they should advise you to perform one and the replacement of seals in the watch if the watch is designed for swimming.  If you ever have moisture in your watch, rush it to us immediately.  This is like your timepiece is having a heart attack, time is of the essence.  Generally we can dry out your watch and save you from a complete new movement replacement.  Are you looking for a professional divers watch in the Lake Geneva area?  Stop in and see our expansive watch collection.  We are open Monday through Saturday 9-5pm.

The only time when it is acceptable to stretch a ring is when there are no gems and the thickness is equal all around the ring.  A wedding band would be a good example.  Wedding bands can often be reduced down in size by compression in a die without damage or removal of any metal.  For rings with gems they should never be stretched.  Stretching will only thin the thinnest part of the ring and most likely cause your gems to become loose.  Streching will only cause the shank - the bottom of the ring to become thinner and prematurely require a shank replacement.  A shank replacement is generally more costly of a repair because it evolves completely replacing the bottom of your ring with a heavier bottom.  Your jeweler should be adding gold to your ring to size your ring up.  This will not make your ring thicker at the bottom but will keep your ring from becoming any thinner during the sizing process.  Fontana Jeweler is your jeweler in the Lake Geneva area.

          A pearl is a delicate gem from freshwater lakes to saltwater seas.  The exterior of a pearl, called nacre, is porous.  This porous surface can become stained from skin oils, makeup, and hairspray.  We recommend that you put your pearls on after your hair and makeup is done.  In most all cases pearls are set into earrings and rings by drilling a hole into the pearl and cementing them onto the post.  Pearls if worn regularly need to be removed from the jewelry.  Then the old cement from the post and inside the hole of the pearl can be cleanned out before re-cementing in place.  A common mistake is to skip cleanning off the old glue first this will not hold the pearl for long.  Cleanning off your pearl is a delicate process.  Our suggestion is to use a small amount of gentle soap like Ivory with a soft cotton cloth.  Be careful not ot wet the area where the pearl is attached to the post.  With pearl necklaces be careful not to wet the silk cord or it will rot from the moisture and fall apart.  Pearl companies recommend every 2 or 3 years pearls should be restrung.  We know they will last longer however if they break you could loose some of the pearls.  We advise that cemented pearls should be re-cemented every 2 years depending on usage.  As time goes on your pearl strand can become stretched and the spacing between the pearls may differ so a restring will bring back the crispness to your pearl stand.  Be good to your pearls and they will last for generations to come.  Are you looking for jewelry featuring pearls?  Our showroom just 6 miles west of Lake Geneva features many different selections featuring pearls from china to Tahiti.  Stop in today and see our expansive jewelery collection.

With the introduction of screw backs years ago they seemed like the perfect answer to stop people from loosing their earrings.  They took more time to screw on and when working correctly gave a good feeling of security.  However there are some problems that usually always develop with screw backs.  The most common one is the threads become a little worn as time goes by.  The screw back becomes a little loose and can turn on its own.  If you do not periodically check your backs they will eventually unscrew themselves and your earrings will fall out.  In some cases the screw backs become stripped or cross threaded causing them to loose there security factor.  A proper working pair of earring screw backs should have a little bit of resistance when turned to be screwed on.  If you can take your finger and spin the back off with a couple flicks you need different backs.  As with all earrings all screw backs are not the same.  Generally older earrings or high end jewelry is equipped with thicker screw posts and courser threads.  These dramatically add to the security of your earrings.  If you ever question the security of your earring backs bring them in for a complimentary security evaluation.  Here at Fontana Jeweler we generally do not advise using screw backs.  Most ladies have diamond stud style earrings they wear all the time and with screw back sometimes there in nothing to stop them  from unscrewing while they wear them.  Snap backs can be a problem to, as they come in different thickness and weights.  All snap backs are not created equal.  Entry level jewelry usually comes with foil thin lightweight earring backs and sometimes it is no wonder you have lost your earrings.  Here at Fontana Jeweler we recommend heavy snap backs for all your fine jewelry.  We do not want you to loose your earrings.  Our available heavy earring backs snap so securely with  an audible sound that tells you they are going to stay in.  In fact with our heavy backs if you caught one of your earrings on a towel or similar item, jokingly I would say your ear might come off first.  When you have an expensive pair of earrings you need to be confident that you will not lose one.  Jewelery should always be about fun and enjoyment with no worries.  Hope this helps with your questions about snap on and screw type earring backs.  Fontana Jeweler is you source for jewelry and diamonds on the west end of Geneva Lake.

Alexandrite a rare gem, few jewelrs have them.  Our collection features a few pieces with alexandrite.  We are proud to be able to show you this amazing color change gem.  Named after the Russian tsar Alexander II (1818-1881).  The first specimens were discovered in April 1834 in the emerald mines by the Tokavaya river in the Urals.  One of the most amazing features of this gem is it's ability to change it's color.  In daylight it exhibits a bluish-green color.  In incadescent light it turns a soft shade of red, purplish-red or raspberry red, especially in fine quality.  Alexandrite is very scarce due to its chemical composition.  The gem requires specific required geological conditions.  Russia has remained the primary source for Alexandrite until 1987 when mines in Brazil discovered Alexandrite.  The Alexandrites from Brazil do often display a good color change however the Russian Alexandrites usually display a stronger color saturation.  Alexandrite does come from other areas but rarely ever does the gem display a good color change.  The color change sometimes goes from a green to a brownish red.  Alexandrites still to this day showing excellent color change with good clarity are one of the worlds most rare gems, more rare than diamonds.  Fontana Jeweler is your source for Gems in the Geneva Lake area, stop in we would love to teach you about them and show you are fine examples.

At Fontana Jeweler a full recondition of a clock movement means a complete disasembly of the clock movement.  Ultrasonic cleaning is performed with high quality clock cleaning solution of every movement part including the mainsprings then dried.  Each clock part is examined for wear and bronze bushings are installed on every worn pivot hole.  Bronze bushings are like bearings for the clock gear pivots.  Next the pivot ends of each gear are polished to a smooth surface.  The mainsprings are inspected for damage, burrs, and strength with replacements installed into the clean mainspring barrels if necessary.  Only the highest quality mainspring oil is used.  The clock parts are then reassembled, ajusted and oiled using the finest oils and lubricants.  The clock case is then dusted and cleaned along with the glass.  Last the movement is installed back into its clock case and timed for accuracy.  After a clock is cleaned and reconditioned by Fontana Jeweler they usually do not require mantenance usually for seven to ten years.  They do not require a yearly service or oiling.  Also the clock should be would all the way tight just like when new.  With the quality clock reconditioning we perform the fussy qualities of running an antique clock go away.  Fontana Jeweler is you place for clock repair in the Lake Geneva area.  Fontana Jeweler is located on the west end of Geneva Lake.

Sadly, due to the rarity factor when it comes to finding a qualified jeweler and diamond setter most stores today do not offer on site repair.  So what do they do?  I have experienced stores telling customers they have jewelers that work for them on an off-site location.  I have found in some instances stores use what is called a job shop.  With our location close to Chicago there are many of them.  When a customer drops off a repair their valuables are usually shipped to the workshop where any one of a number of jewelers perform the repair. Here at Fontana Jeweler we offer in house clock repair to our customers.  Our trained clock makers use the highest power ultrasonic for cleaning, combined with the best quality clock oils to ensure a long lasting repair.  We guarantee all the work we do.  A tipical clock overhaul will last from 7 to 10 years with out any service before we should need to do an overhaul again.  We do insist that all mechanical clocks should be overhauled every 7 years to prevent severe wear on the movement.  Clocks that have not ben properly cleaned at recomended intervals can need  a new movent replacement.  Estimates on all clock repair are free of charge and take only a few days to do.  We perform all types of clock repair on any model or style made including grandfather clocks.  On a grandfather clock cleaning we come to your home and remove the movement to perform the overhaul in our work shop.  The process takes hours of time with specialized equipment, and for a quality service this can not be done in your home.  One thing to look out for is your grandfather clock is not working after 7 of more years, you call a clock repair shop and they come out and oil your clock only.  Your clock may run however it has entered into a state of wearing inself out.  Simply adding oil to a dirty clock may make it run but anywhere from a few days to a couple of years it will stop again with the movement most likely needing a complete replacement.  The clock reapair shop made quick money but did a bad thing to the customer.  Just like your car you change your oil and not just add more.  At Fontana Jeweler we are here to help you with all you clock needs, always doing the right thing for you.
